Welcome to

[bigletter]With National Breastfeeding Month coming to a close, along with Black Breastfeeding Week (Aug. 25-31, 2017), I figure that now is as good of a time as any to talk about the support that I have received over the duration of my breastfeeding journey. I am nine months postpartum, and while it seems that breastfeeding is a piece of cake for me, I still struggle every now and then with low milk supply, finding somewhere to nurse or pump in public, and just being downright too tired to pump enough milk. During my pregnancy, I was afraid that Marquis would not be as hands-on with the entire breastfeeding experience. With my mother’s lack of breastfeeding knowledge, I was afraid she would not be able to help either. I was so incredibly wrong! For me, the support while breastfeeding has been one of the top reasons why breastfeeding has been achievable. [/bigletter]

Family and Peer Support While Breastfeeding

[bigletter]When you have a newborn baby, and summer is approaching, you begin to contemplate swim lessons. We all have seen the videos circulating on the internet of an infant falling into a pool, only to turn on their backs and start floating. Those videos make some people anxious or uncomfortable, while they make others feel empowered. “YEAH! I’m going to do that to my baby,” or “NO! That’s child endangerment!” I naturally felt uncomfortable seeing such a small child fall into a pool, swallowing what seems like too much chlorine water. However, I sat and thought about why this was necessary. Swimming with infants is a life lesson that all of us parents, new or old, need to know.[/bigletter]

Swimming with Infants: 8 Things You Need to Know

[bigletter]You taught me everything
Everything you’ve given me
I’ll always keep it inside
You’re the driving force in my life, yeah
There isn’t anything
Or anyone that I could be
And it just wouldn’t feel right
If I didn’t have you by my side
You were there for me to love and care for me
When skies were gray
Whenever I was down
You were always there to comfort me
And no one else can be
What you have been to me you will always be
You will always be the girl
In my life for all times[/bigletter]

Word to Your Mother: 8 Reasons to Thank My Mom

[bigletter]The Fourth of July promises of sun, sand, vacation, fireworks, and FOOD. We won’t talk about patriotism. We. Just. Won’t. However, that is the exact opposite of what I ended up doing. I had a four day weekend, and I had so much free time, I did not know what to do with myself! Why use my weekdays off of work preparing food for a cookout, going to events, or mingling with people? That’s WAY too much energy to exert on the occasional off day. So, just to be clear, this post will not be about all of the amazing things I did during my four day weekend. However, in this Fourth of July recap, I will discuss what that four day weekend meant to me while explaining just how lazy I was![/bigletter]

Fourth of July Recap: Four Day Weekend Bliss

[bigletter]Every working mama’s nightmare: Your supply drops a few days before a work trip. Yep. That is the struggle I was facing last week. My milk production dropped drastically before I had to go out of town for two days. I had to figure out how I was going to have six, eight-ounce bottles prepared for Jaxon. This isn’t a story about how I became the Fresh Prince of a town called Bel-Air, but more like the story about how I was able to increase milk supply quickly.[/bigletter]

[bigletter]On June 18, 2016, we threw a cheap gender reveal party. I cut a gender reveal cake to reveal the color blue. From that point on, you were no longer a mystery. You were Jaxon *insert various names* Richards. From that point on, you had an identity. Because of that, I shed a few tears. From that point on, I felt like I really knew you.[/bigletter]

Gender Reveal Flashback: How to Throw a Cheap Gender Reveal Party

[bigletter]Shoutout to Solange Knowles for her song on the album, A Seat at the Table featuring Q-Tip, with a flair of Aaliyah. In the song, she talks about taking a little time to escape from the sadness and intensity going on in the world and the need to just take a break and love herself, her husband, and her son. “…throughout that, [self-care] becomes a mission within itself,” Solange said. Although her need for self care is currently different than mine, it still resonates with me. It is my mission to practice better self care. Therefore, I feel the need to discuss five new mom self care tips for myself.[/bigletter]

Borderline (An Ode to Self Care): New Mom Self-Care Tips

[bigletter]For Jaxon’s first Memorial Day holiday, we took another family trip to Chicago. Yes, I put him on an airplane again. Yes, naive Brittany thought it would be similar to his first trip on an airplane. No, it was not. I will get to that later.  Just to warn you, I’m going to keep it real here. Babies at weddings and other events can either be a fun experience for everyone involved, or a headache.[/bigletter]

Babies at Weddings: Memorial Day Recap

“If you want to know who your real friends are, have a baby.” This is what happens to friendships after pregnancy.

I hear this comment a lot. I have never said this myself, but I have seen other people make the comment on social media. However, I want to take the time to address it. I have had this discussion briefly with other mothers to get their opinion. My opinion is this: I do not totally agree with the comment. Apparently, women who get pregnant and have a child lose their friends in the process. They stop inviting mamas to go out, they do not text or call to check up on the mom or their baby, they do not show up to the baby shower, etc. I can only speak from the experience of a new mother, but allow me to explain why I disagree. And if you think I’m wrong, then this would be a good time to reevaluate a few friendships.

Friendships After Pregnancy: Real Friends, How Many Of Us Have Them?

Let me just start by saying, WOW! I had a wonderful first Mother’s Day with my mom, grandma, and Jaxon. This day last year, I was getting close to being 3 months pregnant, but at that time, we had not told anyone but my mom. Being the person that she is, she surprised me with a *secret* Mom-to-be card and balloon. I didn’t consider myself a MOM then because I was just coming to grips with actually BECOMING a mom. So, this year was my first real celebration.
